He has been nominated by the majority Labour group to be formally elected as Hull's First Citizen at the council's annual meeting next week. Until last week's council elections, the post had been destined for current Deputy Lord Mayor Mark Collinson. But the Liberal Democrat councillor lost his seat in Newland, while his party lost overall control at the Guildhall. The result meant a sudden elevation in the pecking order for Councillor Inglis. Traditional Labour group policy has backed the position of Lord Mayor being decided on the grounds of seniority. With 20 years of service under his belt, Councillor Inglis is next in line. With his nomination as Lord Mayor certain to be agreed because of Labour's new majority, he will take over from current Lord Mayor David Gemmell. In doing so, he will chalk up a first by being Hull's first openly gay Lord Mayor. He was council leader for two years from 2003, winning two successive elections before being ousted in an internal coup and replaced by Ken Branson. He was subsequently suspended by Labour after being charged with historic child abuse dating back to the time he was employed as a social worker. He was eventually found not guilty on all charges against him following a two-week trial at Leeds Crown Court. During his suspension, Mr Inglis ruffled Labour feathers by voting to support the formation of a Liberal Democrat administration after the Lib Dems won more seats than Labour in the 2006 elections. |
