Social services staff have denied
claims that a Warwick care centre was unfit for children following a protest on
Monday.
Kevin Arnott, of Warwick, launched the one-man demonstration because he was
unhappy with the conditions inside a bungalow at Myton Park, which is used for
separated parents to meet with their children.
He said when he visited with his
daughter the building was not kept tidy and there were no locks on the girls'
toilets or batteries in the fire alarms.
He added: "It stunk in there and the
first thing I did was ask if I could open the windows.
"There were crayons stamped into the
floor and it has been like that throughout the Christmas period.
"We went in there and it was absolute
filth. I wish somebody would let me show everyone what is happening."
He also said the handles were coming
off the doors and plaster was falling from the walls while he was there before
Christmas.
Mr Arnott, who claims he has
complained to the centre on a number of occasions, added that he was concerned
for the safety of children who were using the centre on a regular basis and
wanted something to be done to clean the rooms up.
The centre consists of a bungalow and
a meeting room which is used regularly by children and parents. It is run by
Warwickshire County Council's social services department which claims that there
are regular checks.
A social services spokesman said:
"This building had two health and safety investigations last year, the latest
one being in December.
"There is an on-site cleaner and we are satisfied that
the building is clean and safe and we would refute any claims to the contrary."
He added that a family had used the room before Mr Arnott but the centre staff
could not suggest any other reason for the problem.
